Bombardier Delivers Two Amphibious Aircraft to Government of Newfoundland and Labrador

  • Bombardier 415 aircraft will join forest firefighting fleet

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced today that it has delivered two Bombardier 415 amphibious aircraft to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. The order for the aircraft was announced in March 2014 and the first aircraft was delivered in May 2014. The second aircraft, which was unveiled today in St. John’s, Newfoundland, was delivered in September 2015.

As previously announced by Bombardier, and based on list price, the contract for the two aircraft is valued at approximately $73.7 million US.

“The Canadian-built Bombardier 415 aircraft has a proven track record in firefighting and is an essential tool for the protection of our communities, environment, resources and wildlife. The aircraft has been central to our government’s strategic priority to increase capacity to fight forest fires in our province,” said the Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with Bombardier.”

“We thank the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for its continued confidence in Bombardier’s unique aircraft. Our long-standing relationship began in 1987 with the purchase of the province’s first CL-215 aircraft, and was strengthened in 2010 with the purchase of its first Bombardier 415 aircraft,” said Stéphane Villeneuve, Vice President, Specialized Aircraft, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “Considering Newfoundland and Labrador’s robust, lake-rich terrain and limited airport access to remote areas, the Bombardier 415 aircraft is the best choice for combatting the region’s forest fires and accessing hard-to-reach areas.”

More than 160 Bombardier 415 aircraft and its predecessors, the CL-215 and CL-215T aircraft, are in service worldwide. Canada is home to nearly 60 of these aircraft – one of the largest national fleets of its kind in the world.

About the Bombardier 415 aircraft

The Bombardier 415 firefighter aircraft has a normal cruise speed of 180 KT (333 km/h). In an average mission of six nautical miles (11 km) distance from water to fire, it can complete nine drops within an hour and deliver 14,589 US gallons (55,233 litres) of fire suppressant.
