Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation is gold sponsor at the international Metro Rail congress and exhibition, taking place from today until April 11, in Madrid, Spain. Bombardier will present its most advanced solutions for the mass transit market, including the BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling technology, operating on Metro Madrid; the BOMBARDIER INNOVIA Monorail 300, INNOVIA Metro 300 and INNOVIA APM automated people mover systems (the latter an essential element of Madrid-Barajas Airport ground transportation), and the globally-delivered BOMBARDIER MOVIA driverless metro cars.
Bombardier is one of the most strongly represented high technology companies in the Madrid region, with over 400 employees at its engineering, operation and services sites. These include a Centre of Excellence for Rail Signalling Engineering, a Service Delivery Centre for the Madrid-Barajas Airport APM system’s operation and maintenance, a Global Centre of Competence for high speed train maintenance services and a global showroom for Bombardier’s transportation and aerospace technology. The signalling engineering centre is also the headquarters of a business region that spans the Iberian as well as North and Latin American markets and provides its expertise to Bombardier’s major CBTC projects worldwide, including the four-line London Underground Sub-Surface Railway upgrade.

Significantly increased capacity for Metro Madrid Lines 1 and 6
Bombardier's first large scale, advanced CITYFLO 650 CBTC solution has delivered 30% higher capacity on Metro Madrid Lines 1 and 6 since operation with the system started in 2008. Reducing the dynamic interval between trains to 40 seconds, the system increases service frequency and regularity, while providing improvements to safety and reduced maintenance costs. The success, in close co-operation with Metro Madrid, has made this project a major reference, prompting operators worldwide to start similar projects. For the London Underground, the CITYFLO 650 CBTC solution will be installed without interruption to service. Other projects for this technology include the new Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit system in Malaysia as well as the São Paulo Metro in Brazil, and the new INNOVIA Monorail 300 system, also for São Paulo, which will carry more than 180 million passengers per year.
CITYFLO 650 is a moving block radio-based system that uses wide area networks to communicate between control centre and train. In addition to installation without interruption to service and to tight timelines, it can provide interoperability with legacy train control systems and be adapted to country requirements. In operation or delivery on almost 30 lines around the world, including in London, Madrid, Klang Valley and São Paulo, major projects also include Shenzhen Metro Line 3, China, which was delivered in 22 months. Bombardier’s rail control solutions portfolio covers the full range of CITYFLO mass transit and BOMBARDIER INTERFLO mainline solutions plus wayside and onboard products.
High availability at Madrid Barajas Airport Terminal 4
Spain’s first fully automated public transportation connection, at Madrid-Barajas Airport, delivered and operated by Bombardier, has provided a high average availability of 99.86% since the start of operations in 2006. The figure exceeds the level that would already ensure service without interruptions. The INNOVIA APM 100 system, which also includes Bombardier’s CITYFLO 550 train control technology, runs over 2 km between Terminal 4 and its satellite, carrying more than 9 million passengers every year. The quality of the technology, project delivery and ongoing operation has resulted in Bombardier's Spanish technicians taking part in other projects around the world including in Beijing and Guangzhou (China) and Heathrow and Gatwick (UK).
A world leading metro supplier
Bombardier Transportation is a world leading metro supplier to over 40 cities worldwide. In November 2008, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded Bombardier a contract to deliver 219 driverless MOVIA metro vehicles. In April 2013, Bombardier received an order for 45 additional driverless cars from the LTA. With the new order, a fleet of 264 fully automated MOVIA metro cars will run underground on the world’s longest driverless mass rapid transit line at 42 km.
