Bombardier: Deutsche Bahn Orders 42 New Prize-Winning Double-Deckers for $73 Million US

Bombardier Transportation has received an order to supply an additional 42 double-deck coaches to Deutsche Bahn (DB). The contract is valued at about $73 million US (57 millions euros). Deutsche Bahn is exercising the third option of the 2003 framework agreement that included an order for 298 double-deck coaches and options on another 300 vehicles. Delivery of the 298 double-deck coaches of the base contract is nearly completed, and another 49 vehicles were ordered in 2005 and 2006. The new vehicles are to be delivered during the second half of 2008.

The double-deckers will be built at Bombardier's Görlitz site while the Siegen plant will supply the bogies. Most of the 12 cab and 30 trailer cars of this new Deutsche Bahn order will go into service on the Taunus route; three cab cars are envisaged for operation in South Hesse.

Bombardier Transportation was awarded Deutsche Bahn's "Special Prize of 2006" for its 2003 series double-deck coaches at the international rail exhibition Innotrans on September 19, 2006.  Bombardier was the only vehicle manufacturer to be honored by DB for the outstanding quality and reliability of its double-deckers. Stéphane Rambaud-Measson, President Mainline & Metros, Bombardier Transportation, said: "This prize shows the considerable appreciation our customer Deutsche Bahn has for this superior, innovative vehicle, which is also enjoying increasing popularity amongst passengers."

Deutsche Bahn operates a total of more than 1,400 Bombardier double-deck coaches. In addition, Bombardier double-deckers are also in service in Israel, Denmark and Luxembourg.

Providing exceptional passenger comfort, the vehicles are air-conditioned and offer ample multipurpose areas. The new cars will feature the standard facilities designed to accommodate disabled persons, plus visual and acoustic warning systems, as well as exterior loudspeakers. With its high transport capacity, the double-deck coach ideally meets the requirements for local and regional transport.

Bombardier Transportation has its global headquarters in Berlin, Germany, with a presence in over 60 countries. It has an installed base of approximately 97,000 vehicles worldwide. The company offers the broadest product portfolio and is recognized as the leader in the global rail sector.
