Bombardier Grows Its Presence in the African Rail Signalling Market

  • Six confirmed projects underway across continent

Rail technology leaderBombardier Transportation is growing its presence in Africa. Spanning the continent, Bombardier’s advanced, globally proven rail control solutions are the technology of choice across six projects, from South Africa to Zambia to Algeria.

Work is well underway in South Africa on the major order won in 2013 to deliver the BOMBARDIER INTERFLO 200 mainline solution for Durban’s Main Corridors. Teams are now working out of the two project sites in Durban and Johannesburg. In addition, the BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 250 solution has been moving millions on the Gautrain rapid rail link from Johannesburg since 2012, delivered as part of the integrated BOMBARDIER ELECTROSTAR system.

In Zambia, Bombardier is delivering its INTERFLO 550 solution in consortium with Huawei International Plc Limited and GMC Technologies (Zambia) Ltd for the 1,000km mixed traffic line connecting Livingstone and Chingola.

Bombardier’s INTERFLO 250 ERTMS Level 1 solution is the first European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in Algeria, being introduced on the 140 km Saida to Moulay Slissen and 153 km Saida to Tiaret lines. It is due to start operations at up to 160km/h in 2016. In addition, the country’s first electronic interlocking system, a BOMBARDIER EBI Lock 950 computer-based interlocking solution, is being delivered on the Tabila to Mecheria connection.

Peter Cedervall, President Rail Control Solutions, Bombardier Transportation, said: “Our growing presence in a number of countries in the fast-expanding African signalling market reflects our long-term commitment to our customers and partners and our ability to provide the best solution for each railway administration. We will continue to build engineering and manufacturing capabilities on the African continent together with select partners and ensure our contribution to rapid economic growth.”
