Bombardier Premieres Urban Mobility Innovations for the 21st Century at the 58th UITP World Congress in Vienna

New FLEXITY 2 tram and ECO4 technologies lead display of best-in-class public transport solutions

Bombardier Transportation continues on its quest to drive sustainable mobility solutions for urban centres around the world, featuring some of its latest innovations at the 58th World Congress and Exhibition of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) in Vienna, June 7-11, 2009. The event is the most important international forum in the field of mass transit and organized around the theme “Public transport – making the right mobility choices”.

Leading the parade of transit technologies at the UITP event will be the world premiere of the BOMBARDIER FLEXITY 2 tram. Bombardier will also present details on its leading edge BOMBARDIER TALENT 2 and BOMBARDIER SPACIUM commuter trains.

Demonstrations of the BOMBARDIER ECO4 portfolio of energy saving technologies aimed at optimizing environmental and total train performance will also be featured as part of Bombardier’s activities at the UITP Exhibition. In the field of signalling, real-time operations of the BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 communication-based train control system can be seen.

“We will present a series of innovative, sustainable and expertly designed solutions for urban transit which make the right mobility choices a lot easier”, said André Navarri, President and COO Bombardier Transportation, at the opening day of the event.

“There is an increasing recognition around the world that the climate is right for trains, and that is especially true now that urban population growth and congestion have become critical issues for many urban centres,” Navarri added. “Our mandate is to provide transit solutions for these cities to achieve sustainable urban mobility, and we are showcasing a number of them here in Vienna.”

He concluded: “There is no better place than Vienna to present the new FLEXITY 2 tram concept. Our production history in this city dates back to 1823, and just last year we opened Europe’s most modern manufacturing plant for trams and light rail vehicles.”

Bombardier rail products at the Mobility and City Transport Exhibition
Bombardier will be displaying vehicle models of the world premiere FLEXITY 2 tram and the new TALENT 2 train, the latest design in commuter and regional trains, at its stand during the event. A number of interactive modules will also allow hands-on experience with Bombardier’s innovative ECO4 energy saving applications for use in mass transit and other fields of the railway market. The Bombardier exhibition stand is located in hall B / 2D200.

FLEXITY 2 tram and the BOMBARDIER FLEXX Urban 3000 bogie
The FLEXITY 2 tram is the latest development of the highly successful FLEXITY modular tram platform. It combines proven elements and innovations which make it fit for future developments in urban transport.

With FLEXITY, Bombardier was the first in industry to combine a 100% low-floor technology with conventional wheel-set bogies, allowing for low-level entrance that guarantees easy access. The FLEXITY 2 tram will not only feature this breakthrough technology, but also an improved carbody concept, better corrosion protection, an improved cab structure, an enhanced air-conditioning system, a unique driver’s cab and the second generation of BOMBARDIER MITRAC traction equipment. In addition, it also showcases exchangeable front modules and a flexible interior design with unprecedented possibilities for customization.

As an option, the FLEXITY 2 tram can also be equipped with the new BOMBARDIER PRIMOVE system. PRIMOVE allows catenary-free and contactless operation and is a new solution for tram networks in historic cityscapes.

The FLEXITY 2 tram is equipped with the FLEXX Urban 3000 bogie. This enhanced bogie design combines the latest technical advances to give comfort to passengers, easy access to trams and lowers costs for operators by using proven and robust wheel sets and drive technologies.

The FLEXX Urban 3000 bogie is characterized by low noise and high comfort, robustness and reliability with a high level of safety. A high standardization combined with various optional equipments are both answering market demands for high technical reliability, significant life cycle costs reduction, long term availability as well as reduced delivery time of spare parts.

TALENT 2 commuter and regional train
The TALENT 2 train represents a new era in regional and suburban rail transport and sets completely new standards in technology, safety, traveling comfort and design. The two-to-six-car electrical units are fully air-conditioned, equipped with modern passenger information displays and can be arranged flexibly and individually on account of their modular construction. With high acceleration and up to two sliding plug doors on each side of the car, the TALENT 2 train offers ideal conditions for speedy regional and suburban railway traffic. It has already been confirmed as the future backbone for the vehicle fleet of the Deutsche Bahn Regio AG, and can also provide the same type solution for other operators.

SPACIUM 3.O6 commuter train
Bombardier’s SPACIUM is a new generation of commuter train with a radically new design that addresses the dual challenges of comfort and capacity in a highly passenger-oriented and futuristic single-deck concept.

Initially developed for the Ile-de-France region of Paris, the SPACIUM 3.O6 offers an extra-wide articulated carbody and can accommodate the same number of passengers as a double deck vehicle. This brings all the advantages of single tier technology without limiting capacity or seating provision: ease of access, visibility and easy circulation throughout the train.

ECO4 products and technologies
ECO4 is a portfolio of eco-active technologies, products and solutions which offer best-in-class environmental and total train performance. ECO4 products help balancing the four cornerstones of energy, efficiency, economy and ecology. ECO4 products enable energy savings of up to 50 per cent customized to any fleet.

The following ECO4 applications can be experienced at interactive modules on the Bombardier Transportation stand at the UITP Mobility & City Transport Exhibition:

BOMBARDIER EBI Drive 50 Driver Assistance System

With traction energy savings of up to 15 per cent, plus costs and wear reductions, the EBI Drive 50 Driver Assistance System is the world’s first integrated solution in this area. The smart ECO4 software tool is assisting train drivers with recommendations for velocity as well for acceleration and deceleration in order to optimize their driving styles and minimize the energy needed to run a train according to its allotted timetable. Smoother operation of trains also results in reduced wear of wheel sets, engines, brakes and tracks.

PRIMOVE catenary-free operation

PRIMOVE presents an entirely new prospect, particularly for trams operating in historic city centers. Thanks to this technology cityscapes will no longer be disrupted by overhead lines. It allows catenary-free operation of FLEXITY trams in all surroundings including underground. One of its outstanding features is the safe and contactless power transfer. The electric supply components are completely hidden under the vehicle and beneath the track, thus ensuring operation in all weather conditions.

MITRAC Energy Saver

The system stores the electrical energy released when braking and allows it to be used during the next acceleration of the vehicle or in drive operation. The technology is based on double layer capacitors and can help reduce the energy consumption of a light rail or metro system by up to 30 per cent. In addition, it enables catenary-free operation for short distances.

CITYFLO 650 communication-based train control
CITYFLO 650 is a communication-based train control system. It increases network capacities through shorter and more consistent headways by allowing moving block operation. Inexpensive to install, it fully exploits the capacity of the system and reduces energy and wear on the track and vehicles. The CITYFLO 650 solution eliminates wayside equipment due to its simple, reliable radio-based train-to-wayside communications systems.

The system has recently been installed to parts of the Metro Madrid network, which is one of the busiest in Europe. The installation took place without interruption to services. The CITYFLO 650 module at the Bombardier stand allows online access to the operations of the Madrid network.
