Bombardier Receives $29 Million Dollar US Order for BiLevel Commuter Rail Cars from Utah Transit Authority, USA

Bombardier Transportation announced today that it received a firm order from the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) in the United States for the supply of 12 Bombardier BiLevel commuter rail vehicles. Valued at approximately $29 million US, the contract calls for the design, manufacture and delivery of the new commuter vehicles. The new cars will be used to provide service between North Weber County and Salt Lake City, Utah in its first phase. Future phases will extend commuter rail 120 miles from Brigham City in the north to Payson in the south. The contract includes an option for up to 23 additional cars.

“The BiLevel car continues to be the most popular multi-level commuter rail car in North America with more than 750 BiLevel cars in operation with 11 public transit authorities across Canada and the United States,” said William Spurr, President, Bombardier Transportation, North America.

The BiLevel commuter rail car is a service-proven transit solution that delivers unparalled reliability and cost efficiency, along with some of the shortest delivery schedules in the industry. Moreover, the BiLevel cars offer the advantages of a common platform, allowing our customers to build-in their needs and requirements. Just recently, Bombardier initiated delivery of BiLevel cars to a twelfth operator: the New Mexico Mid-Region Council of Governments, in New Mexico, USA. The new vehicles are expected to run on the new transit line, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, by the end of 2005.

“We are very proud to be part of UTA’s vision to provide enhanced and reliable services for its passengers and look forward to a long term relationship with our new customer,” Spurr added.

The vehicles will be built at Bombardier’s Thunder Bay, Ontario and Plattsburgh, New York, manufacturing facilities. Delivery of the 12 cars is expected to extend from June to October 2006.

In North America, Bombardier Transportation is the leader in intercity, commuter rail, automated rapid transit and automated guideway transit systems. It also maintains two of the largest multi-level commuter rail car fleets in Canada and the United States through its North American Services unit.
