Bombardier Showcases CSeries Aircraft Advanced Flight Deck for First Time

Bombardier Aerospace showcased the future of flying today with a virtual tour of the all-new CSeries aircraft flight deck.

During the 49th International Paris Air Show, Robert Dewar, Vice President and General Manager, CSeries, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft, demonstrated how the new flight deck makes the CSeries family of aircraft one of the most technologically advanced and efficient airliners in its class.

“The CSeries cockpit takes flying to a whole new level by reducing costs while improving operational efficiency,” said Mr. Dewar. “This flight deck for the future offers enhanced pilot awareness, increased simplicity, paperless operation and reduced pilot training time.”

“Bombardier had a very rare opportunity when developing the CSeries aircraft to start with a clean-sheet design, unencumbered by the need for common systems from a predecessor aircraft,” he added. “The CSeries aircraft allowed Bombardier to use the latest technology available in collaboration with our supplier Rockwell Collins Inc.”

This leading-edge technology will debut on Bombardier’s CSeries family of aircraft, designed for the growing 100- to 149-seat market. The CSeries aircraft combine advanced materials and proven methods to meet commercial airline requirements in 2013 and beyond. The CS100 aircraft is scheduled to enter revenue service in 2013, followed by the CS300 aircraft in 2014.

Mr. Dewar was joined in Paris by Colin Mahoney, Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Support for Rockwell Collins’ Commercial Systems business unit.

“The Pro Line Fusion avionics solution provides an open architecture that features an intuitive graphical human-machine interface, extensive situational awareness capabilities, and comprehensive integration with aircraft systems,” said Mr. Mahoney. “To enhance operational efficiency, the system can offer information management capabilities for database management, aircraft maintenance and airline operations planning.”

LCD Displays
The integrated flight deck features high-resolution 15.1-inch diagonal LCD displays, the industry's largest, capable of enhanced and synthetic vision. The flight management system display is based on phases of flight, giving the flight crew improved access to information while reducing workload. Graphical Flight Planning functionality allows the crew to click on the map to search for information or modify the flight plan.

The MultiScanTM weather radar autonomously processes the entire block of atmosphere ahead of the aircraft and searches for the most significant weather information, without pilot intervention. The crew is alerted with a color change when the radar predicts wind shear, giving the crew plenty of time to take appropriate action.

Head-Up Flying
The glareshield radio tuning is a feature unique to the CSeries aircraft that illustrates Bombardier’s focus on head-up flying. It allows critical tasks, such as frequency changes, head-up guidance system data entry, navigation control and support functions for the displays, to all be done from the glareshield.

Sidesticks are the pilot interface with the fly-by-wire control system that provides optimized handling and flight envelope protection.

The Pro Line Fusion system offers extensive growth capabilities to meet all anticipated future air space requirements, as well as high reliability to meet the rigorous demands of commercial airline operations.
