Bombardier Will Deliver 47 Low-Floor Trams to the City of Dortmund, Germany

Bombardier Transportation announced today that it has received an order from the Transport Authority of Dortmund in Germany (DSW21, Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG) for the delivery of 47 Bombardier FLEXITY Classic trams. Bombardier will be responsible for delivering the mechanical part of the trams which is valued at more than 70 million euros ($85 million US). The contract includes an option for five additional vehicles. Delivery of the 47 trams is scheduled to take place between October 2007 and August 2010.

Bombardier Transportation’s site in Bautzen, Germany will be responsible for the design and manufacture of the FLEXITY Classic vehicles. The electrical equipment will be supplied by Vossloh Kiepe GmbH.

Walter Grawenhoff, President, Light Rail Vehicles, Bombardier Transportation stated: “This order further demonstrates the trust in our proven FLEXITY Classic vehicle concept which has already been successfully implemented in a number of German cities. By introducing a new fleet of low-floor trams, the Transport Authority of Dortmund will considerably increase its passengers’ traveling comfort.”

The FLEXITY trams for Dortmund are based on the low-floor vehicles manufactured for Frankfurt/Main in Germany and feature mileage-proven wheel-set bogies as well as level entrances. The 30-meter long vehicles can carry up to 178 passengers, including 64 seated. For heightened passenger comfort and safety the new trams are equipped with air conditioning and a video-surveillance system. Special areas for disabled passengers are also planned.

Transport authorities worldwide have already ordered over 1300 Bombardier FLEXITY trams and light rail vehicles. Vehicles of the FLEXITY Classic family are in successful revenue service in the German cities of Kassel, Essen, Schwerin, Dessau, Dresden, Halle, Frankfurt/Main and Leipzig as well as in Krakow in Poland. They will soon begin operation in Bremen (Germany) and Adelaide (Australia).
