Bombardier Wins $61 Million US Contract for Electrical Multiple Units in Perth, Western Australia

Bombardier Transportation and joint venture partner EDI Rail* have been awarded an order by the Western Australian Government to build 15 three-car electric commuter trains. The contract is valued at approximately AU$157 million (93 million euros/ $123 million US). Bombardier’s share of the contract will be AU$78 million (46 million euros/ $ 61 millionen US).

The 15 commuter trains, referred to as the B-Series by the customer, are an extension of a contract awarded to the joint venture in 2002 for the supply and maintenance of 31 B-Series trains.  Maintenance of the 15 new trains will be incorporated into the joint venture’s maintenance contract for the B-Series fleet.  The B-Series rolling stock is part of the NewMetroRail project, an initiative that effectively doubles the size of Perth’s rail fleet, extends the rail network through the city’s northern suburbs and includes the construction of a new line to the south of the city. The B-Series EMUs, delivered from 2004 to July 2006, have proved extremely popular with the operator and the public alike. Deliveries of the additional B-Series trains will begin in 2009 and continue into 2011, bringing the total number of EMU cars supplied by the joint venture for Perth to over 230.

“This order is a clear endorsement of the performance, reliability and success of the new fleet,” stated Dan Osborne, Managing Director of Bombardier Transportation Australia. “We are pleased to be designing and building these trains in Australia with significant local content.” The stainless steel B-Series trains are narrow gauge, use 25 kV propulsion and travel at 130 kph.

Assembly of the new trains will be carried out at Bombardier’s facility and EDI Rail’s facility in Maryborough, Queensland. Propulsion and traction equipment will be manufactured at Bombardier’s plants in Västerås, Sweden and Pittsburgh, USA. Testing and commissioning will be carried out jointly by the joint venture. This order builds on over 600 narrow gauge carriages already in service in Brisbane and Perth and represents the second order this year for this type of vehicle. Earlier this month, Queensland Rail ordered 20 three-car electric commuter trains as a follow on to current production.
