Bombardier Aerospace today launched a competition for Northern Ireland school pupils to design, build and fly their own unique self-propelled model airplane from everyday objects around the house.
The Flight Experience Challenge is linked to the company’s educational outreach programme, and is aimed at helping young people understand the scientific principles of flight and to allow them to develop their ideas about the future of aerospace.
Engineers and an Education Officer from Bombardier will be visiting schools to encourage pupils and advise teams on the design and manufacture of their model aircraft, in the run up to the competition’s Grand Final in W5 at the Odyssey Complex, Belfast, on Thursday May 18th, 2006. There, teams will be marked on initial design, construction/use of materials, distance of flight and the overall decoration of their aircraft. The winners of each category will be flown to the world-renowned Farnborough International Air Show in July as VIP guests of Bombardier. Their schools will also each receive £1000.
The competition is open to all schools within four categories: Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4/5 and Special Schools. Each team must consist of two pupils and schools can enter as many teams as they wish.
Launching the competition, Michael Ryan, Vice-president and General Manager, Bombardier Aerospace in Belfast, said: “The Flight Experience Challenge is a fun and exciting way to help young people learn about the aerospace industry, and it is a great opportunity to energise and enthuse the next generation of people who will design and build aircraft of the future. The competition is just one of the many educational initiatives we are involved in that are aimed at encouraging young people to consider aerospace as a future career.
“We have been running similar competitions for the past few years, and are very impressed with some of the innovative designs that the children and young people have come up with. We are particularly keen this year that more girls, as well as boys, will be inspired to enter the competition, as women are under-represented in the industry.”
