U.S. FAA Approves Bombardier Service Network For Aircell AXXESS™ EZ Satcom Solution

Bombardier Aerospace today announced the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded a supplemental type certificate (STC) authorizing the installation of AirCell Axxess EZ – the revolutionary new satellite communications system – on widebody Challenger 600, Challenger 601 and Challenger 604 business jets. The first installation was successfully completed on a Challenger 604 aircraft in April at the Bombardier Service Center in Hartford, Connecticut.

The AirCell Axxess EZ system is designed to efficiently replace the MagnaStar® airborne telephone system, which will soon become obsolete due to the termination of service scheduled for December 31, 2008. By using the existing MagnaStar® wiring and component locations, the dual-channel, wireless and broadband-ready satellite telecommunications system can be installed without modifying the aircraft interior, allowing for a speedy return to service.

“The Bombardier Service Center Network is pleased to be in a positon to assist Challenger aircraft customers with this superior replacement solution,” said Leon Botteron, vice-president and general manager, service centers, Bombardier Aircraft Services. “This STC is just one example of our focus and dedication in providing innovative solutions designed to meet and surpass our customers’ needs.”

Challenger operators will benefit from the many service improvements and cost savings afforded by the system. AirCell Axxess EZ is easily expandable, enabling up to eight handsets and four Iridium channels. The average operating cost of the Iridium service is $2.50 a minute*, half the cost of the previous UHF-based system. In addition, Iridium satcom service is available worldwide. Wireless and broadband services, expected to debut in the coming months, will be available as an additional option.

The AirCell Axxess™ EZ can be installed at Bombardier Service Centers in Dallas, Ft. Lauderdale, Hartford, Tucson and Wichita. Installation is also available through the Bombardier’s worldwide network of Authorized Service Facilities for Challenger aircraft. Installation time will vary based upon the aircraft’s existing MagnaStar® configuration. Operators should contact their Bombardier regional manager for additional details.
